As summer slowly starts to come to an end, that usually only means one thing: back-to-school. For both children and parents, back-to-school either brings about heightened eagerness, anxiety, or just overall jitteriness. Some students are returning 2 the online classroom that they’ve grown accustomed to over the past year, while others are preparing to enter into a physical in-person classroom for the very first time. Regardless of how you or your children are feeling about returning to school, all those emotions are normal and there are several ways that you and your children can work to reduce the back-to-school jitters.

  1. Health and Safety

Your school board and your child’s teachers will have various health and safety protocols that they are required to uphold and maintain, not just for themselves, but for their students as well. As your child prepares to return to in-person learning, you can begin to remind your child about some of these protocols. this can include making sure that they have a mask, are reminded to wash their hands throughout the day, maintain social distancing from others when necessary, and what to do if they ever feel unwell while at school.

  1. Nutrition

Your child’s nutritional health is equally as important as their physical health. Packing your child simple nutritional snacks is just one way to ensure a healthy and balanced meal. Nutritional snacks or meals don’t have to break the bank either and can include a peanut-free granola bar, fresh fruit, or simply an apple as just a few examples.

  1. School Yard Activities

Just because summer is over doesn’t mean that outdoor activities have to stop. Depending on your child’s school and what protocol they have in place as it relates to recess, there may be various activities that your child can participate in with other children during recess. If there’s an indoor recess one day due to rain, there might even be additional activities that your child can participate in.

  1. Back-To-School Manners

Whether it’s in person, or online, your child will be meeting a lot of people come September, and meeting a lot of new people can be nerve-wracking. If possible, have your child introduce themselves to their teacher with you present for added comfort. Encourage your child to introduce themselves to their classmates and to participate and engage with other students in various activities throughout the day.

Going back-to-school is nerve-wracking for many individuals, whether they’re a child, a parent of a child, or even a young adult going back to university. However, with these simple steps and more, the return to the classroom this fall will hopefully be just a little bit easier.
