Canada has long been described by many to be a mosaic.

Our country has alluring scenic locations spread far and wide throughout our provinces and territories, and four delightful seasons that bring about new adventures for each individual. However, this “mosaic” that individuals associate with our country extends far beyond the picturesque views of our landscape. This artwork of Canada extends to its citizens, immigrants and refugees.

In a population of 37.59 million individuals, varying cultures, ethnicities and racial identities comprise the multicultural country that Canada has long prided itself. According to the 2016 Canadian Census, the three largest visible minorities in Canada include Black, South Asian and Chinese individuals (StatCan, 2016). In February, in honor of Black History Month, we wanted to place a spotlight on the many ways that individuals of the Black community have made an impact in their cities and communities.

Likewise, in honor of Asian Heritage Month, we want to highlight and show appreciation for the ways that individuals of this cultural group have made an impact in their communities, whether big or small. For the past 20 years, The Children’s Breakfast Club has strived to emphasize the contributions that various cultural groups have had on the development and success of Canada for generations.

Canada’s diversity is one of our many strengths.

Together, let us acknowledge and honor this strength by shining a light on the Asian Canadian population throughout the month of May.
